Montana’s Credit Unions Reality Fair

Together with the Helena credit unions, Montana’s Credit Unions is coordinating a High School Financial Reality Fair Friday, March 24, 2017 in the Montana State Capitol Rotunda.

Financial Reality Fairs

The Financial Reality Fair is a 60–90 minute experiential learning activity where students get a feel for real‐life monthly budget. They approach the fair as if they need to budget a monthly salary while paying for housing, utilities, transportation, groceries, entertainment, and some surprises along the way.

This Reality Fair is interactive, which will allow students to visit booths and acquire information and budget expenses based on interest and family size. This eye-opening experience will give students a view into what costs they can anticipate and how to budget for the future.

The Financial Reality Fair is flexible, allowing integration into any school size or timeframe.

Volunteers Needed

Local high schools will be busing students up to the Capitol between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to participate in this experiential learning event. Forty-five volunteers are needed for each of the three sessions held throughout the day. Interested individuals can sign up to volunteer here.

Poster Contest

It’s Time for MFEC’s Annual Poster Contest!

The theme for MFEC’s 2017 Poster Contest is “Needs and Wants.”

Submissions are due Friday, October 28, 2016.

Encourage the children in your classroom, kindergarten through fifth grade, to contemplate the concept of managing their money responsibly by distinguishing between their wants and needs. Winning submissions will be featured in MFEC’s 2017 Calendar!

In “Needs and Wants,” creativity is highly encouraged. Children must illustrate their understanding of the important concept that a person’s needs and wants must both come from one source – their income – and it is not an unlimited source. Remember to use a lot of fun colors and fill the space!

  • Needs - things that we need to survive
  • Wants – things that we would like to have

Poster Contest Materials

Participants can create their “Needs and Wants” posters creatively on the submission template provided below.  Please read the Contest Guidelines and prepare a Contest Permission form to accompany each entry.
